Meanwhile the French infantry in the wood finding that they were checked in their attempt to force an entrance into the garden, tried to turn it by its left, but while in the act of passing through a large gap in the fence, they were attacked by the light companies of the 1st brigade of guards under Lord Saltoun, and driven back into the wood. But a large body of the French light troops stealthily advancing along the eastern hedge of the Hougoumont enclosures, made a direct front attack upon the orchard, compelling Lord Saltoun to withdraw his troops, already much reduced in number; in a short time, however, being reinforced upon his left, his Lordship resumed the offensive, clearing the orchard of the enemy, and re-occupying its front hedge, which, with the front wall of the garden, formed the outer line of the defence of Hougoumont. The cannonade, which commenced at first between the British right and the French left, soon became general along both lines; and about one o'clock Napoleon directed a grand attack to be made upon the centre and left of the allied army, intrusting its accomplishment to Marshal Nev, in whose bravery and military skill he put implicit confidence. The troops destined for this important and arduous service consisted of four columns of infantry, amounting to nearly 18,000 men, whose advance was to be covered and supported by no less than ten batteries of 74 guns in all, posted on a ridge of elevated ground, which rose between the French right and the allied left wing.
